IMPORTANT: If you've downloaded this torrent before, you need to redownload it!  When we mastered the .iso image for Byzantium Linux on 10 January 2012 we forgot a very important file - porteus/modules/000-byzantium.xzm, which contains everything that makes Byzantium, well, Byzantium (like the application software).  Without that file you just have a barebones version of Porteus Linux - not helpful, not what we wanted.

Please accept our most sincere apologies.  We're eating a lot of crow right now, and we're going to make sure that this never happens again.

Project Byzantium

Byzantium Linux is a live distribution of Linux designed to help people connect with one another in the absence of convenient access to the Internet.  Specifically, Byzantium aims to help solve the Katrina Problem (the telecommunications infrastructure is too damaged to function) as well as the Egypt Problem (the telecommunications infrastructure is either disconnected or is too hazardous for people to safely use due to surveillance).  Based upon Porteus Linux (itself a derivative of Slackware), the distribution includes two full desktop environments (KDE and LXDE), a full development kit, mesh routing software, a web-based control panel, and web services designed to take the place of websites commonly used by people during times of crisis, such as Twitter and Etherpad.

Please note that this is an alpha release - we are far from finished, and need the help of the Linux community to grow!
