As a fine flavor of Ubuntu using the LXDE desktop env we have here the Lubuntu 11.10 VMware image. Instead of the Gnome Shell or Unity LXDE still has the classic start menu and taskbar. This appliance has the VMware Tools already installed. For using this VMware appliance you will need the free VMware Player.
