Say hello to our latest lightweight, stable, and super fast operating system.
The concept of team Peppermint was to create a web-centric operating system that was easy and intuitive to use, with the LXDE GUI (graphical user interface) proving popular with users, with its lightweight footprint, not consuming unnecessary resources to increase your workflow.
The LXDE environment served us well until 2016, as it evolved into a hybrid environment that continued to impress time and time again, being user friendly, easy on the eyes, plus fast. Further enhancements introduced was the File Manager, Nemo.
We are delighted that on the 3rd February 2022 a community inspired effort occurred with a Distribution Release of Peppermint to carry on a proud tradition of producing a minimal desktop based environment. After the untimely passing of PCNetSpec, in January 2020.
In this release there have been some major changes with us migrating from Ubuntu to Debian, the Xfce desktop as the LXDE desktop had fallen into disuse and became dormant, and the Calamares installer.
The latest version of the Xfce desktop has evolved and matured gracefully since its launch in 1996. Suiting our goal of the minimal apprroach with some essential tools, allowing the user to choose what they want, and how they want to configure their computer.
We have continued with Peppermint’s signature customisations, and truly believe we have produced a work of art that functions flawlessly, upon this new venture. Enjoy.
Our philosophy
The biggest breath of fresh air in the past decade was the likes of Ubuntu and Linux Mint with their commitment to the wider Linux community, offering a welcome place to all users wanting to explore, the Linux-verse. Manjaro and MXLinux are the latest torch bearers to embrace this philosophy to promote Linux to a wider audience and new blood.
The Peppermint team are as committed as the original team were in 2010, as we strive to maintain this tradition of welcoming new users to Linux, with our trademark minimalistic desktop offering them a fully functional product that is fast, easy to understand, and enjoy the Linux experience, with avenues to enhance their comprehension further.
Empowering the planet with Linux is our goal. Join us in this journey.
