Announcing the PCLinuxOS Br Mechanic project.
« on: 19 July 2019 »

Dear friends,

Until some time ago, we used to have some nice tools to work with our computers. There was Redo Backup, there was Parted Magic and there was Hiren's Boot CD.

Sadly, they are no more: Redo Backup is not updated since 2012, Parted Magic became a paid CD and Hiren's boot CD was also discontinued.

So, in the spirit of "Don't ask what your distro can do for you, but ask what you can do for your distro", I started to research and work in a PCLOS live CD that would replace all those ones I cited above.

The result is in its final stages of production now, the PCLinuxOS Br Mechanic.

From its welcome text:

Overview
PCLinuxOS Br Mechanic  is the maintenance version of the PCLinuxOS distro, created in Brazil by the Brazilian PCLinuxOS community administrator  Agent Smith.

This Iso is a live CD with several tools for maintenance of PC's, be it windows or Linux. Root's password is root. Guest's password is guest.

Scope
The scope of PCLinuxOS Br Mechanic is to be an ISO that has the tools for several PC's maintenance tasks.

The programs that are part of PCLinuxOS Br Mechanic are:

        Midori (fast web browser)
Clonezilla (program to clone disks and partitions)
Fsarchiver (program to clone disks and partitions, in the terminal or via GUI)
Htop (Process Monitor and Computer Status)
Fping (scan the network for working computers, cli only)
        Gpicview (image viewer)
        Joe (plain text editor)
        Evince (document viewer, PDF, etc.)
Diskscan (HD surface analyzer - search for bad blocks)
Gsmart Control (HD SMART Analysis Tool)
Chntpw (program to reset windows passwords)
Inxi - GUI (Computer Hardware List Tool)
        Leafpad (pure text editor)
        Lxterminal (LXDE terminal)
        Gparted (graphic disk partitioner)
Q-Photorec (recoverer of deleted files, based on Photorec)
        Fix Screen Resolution
        Test-Disk (Partition recover)
Net Activity Viewer (network connection monitor)
        ClamTK (ClamAV Anti-Virus Graphical Interface)
        CPU-G (Identifies the computer's processor)
        File-Roller (compression manager)
Default Sound Card (choose sound card / standard sound output)
        Synaptic (manages installed packages)

Among others.

And, it is, with great joy, that I report the first tests were very positive: I could list and examine the contents of a windows SAM file, with Chntpw, and, with Qt-Fsarchiver I could backup successfully 2 windows 8 partitions, and transfer them to a dual boot installation, that was previously with windows 7 and PCLinuxOS.
After the successful "Transplant", the installation is now windows 8 and PCLinuxOS, working great.

I'd say that Fsarchiver can backup even PCLinuxOS partitions, since it saves the disk's UID's and restore them along with the disk's image.

So, pretty soon it will be available to the public, after a testing period, so to  polish some rough edges.

And, I'm also open to suggestions, every comment or tip that might help improve the ISO is welcome.

You know, I'm also willing to put MemTest in the ISO, but, for some time now it has not been functional. If someone could help me with that...

Ok ?

Best regards,

Dear friends !!!

Version 02 is almost ready to be tested.

The changelog is as follows:

-Window Manager: IceWM 1.61-1
-Removed Midori browser and installed Epiphany browser
-Removed SpaceFM and installed PCManFM (SpaceFM does not access volumes on the network, not without Udevil, so I decided on PCManFM)
-Redesigned menu with all options easily accessible
-Redesigned Clonezilla launcher
-Fsarchiver tested and running 100%
-Clonezilla running 100%
-Added MemTester, program to selectively test memory.

OK ?
