Asmi Linux is desktop-oriented Linux distribution with editions based on either Ubuntu or Debian. It uses a highly-customised Xfce desktop with some user-friendly touches. Some of its other features include the Calamares system installer, out-of-the-box support for several popular virtual machine managers, a load-to-RAM boot option, the latest Firefox browser, Cloudflare DNS for faster DNS lookup, and SSH multiplexing for faster SSH connections. The project also offers a commercial "Ultimate" edition with additional software and tools.

This is a build of Asmi Linux using Debian 12 (Bookworm) as the base.

The Ubuntu-based edition of Asmi is still the recommended edition for desktop users. The Debian-based edition provides an alternative for people who prefer having a Debian base.

Some differences to keep in mind between Ubuntu and Debian:

  • Debian is more stable in regard to system updates than Ubuntu. Debian packages receive only security updates during its five-year lifespan which reduces the risk of breakage after an update.

  • There is more software available for Ubuntu compared to Debian. Ubuntu has support for Personal Package Archives (PPAs) which provide updated packages for popular software.

  • The software gap on Debian can be filled by using Snap and Flatpak packages. These are installed and enabled out-of-the-box on Asmi, and don't require any additional setup.
