Post by: TheLinuxMan on November 18, 2025, 07:12:24 AM
A free, open source, Basque-language operating system for use in education

Luberri is a GNU/Linux operating system. The latest versions are built on Linux Mint Cinnamon (which is based on Ubuntu). Its main features are:

Lightweight: The Mint Cinnamon system uses little RAM (around 800MB at startup), applications run quickly, and provides a good experience even on older computers.

Easy: It is very intuitive to use. Customizing, installing or uninstalling applications, updating... is easy.

For education: Although it is designed for students and teachers, it has interesting applications for any home. It is lacking in games. It has several applications related to academic subjects: typing, chemistry, geography, mathematics, programming, mind and concept maps... all of which work offline, designed for students who do not have Internet at home. On the other hand, it has many tools for learning to do: text, artistic, vector and technical images, audio and video editing, music composition, transmission... It can access the Windows server domain that public schools usually have, it will be able to recognize the users in such a domain and use the folder corresponding to each one (students, teachers, administration, NoBackup).

Euskalduna: the system can be installed in over a hundred languages, but special care has been taken to ensure that almost all applications are in Basque. To this end, those of us behind Luberri have translated dozens of applications into Basque.

Free: the system and all its applications are free software.

Main applications
Office: Crow Translate, Evince pdf viewer, Calendar, LibreOffice 24.2.5.2 -word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, database...-, Xournal++ digital whiteboard and pdf editor, Zim Wiki for note-taking.

Extras: In addition to the usual Linux Mint features, FreeFileSync is a drive synchronizer, Ksnip is a screenshot editor, Gromit-MPX is a screen drawing and Screekey is a screen viewer, and Veyon is a classroom monitor and control tool.

Education: Foliate epub reader, eXelearning teaching unit editor, Freeplane mind maps, Heimer mind maps, Draw.io diagrams, GCompris educational activities, Geogebra geometry and KBruch fractions, GoldenDict dictionary set (Basque, French, Spanish and English), KTouch typing, Kalzium chemistry (periodic table, molecule editor, etc.), Lumi interactive activity editor, Scratch programming, Stellarium astronomy and Tux Paint object drawing, and Maps and web applications (Berria Ikasgela, Molview, Zigotebody). Special attention has been paid to offline applications so that students without internet can do the activities.

Internet: including the Firefox browser, Thunderbird email and Freetube, which allows you to view YouTube videos without advertising.

Images: scanner, Drawing, Inkscape and Gimp for drawing and photo retouching, Draw.io for sketching, Kcolourchooser, LibreCAD and Sweet Home HD for designing houses and premises, and Pix for viewing and editing photos.

Sound and video: Audacity audio editor, Celulloid and VLC players, Handbrake video converter, Kdenlive video editor, Musescore score editing, OBS Studio audio and video streaming and recording, Peek screen animated gifs, Rhythmbox audio player, Subtitle editor and VokoscreenNG for creating video tutorials.

In addition to the usual system configuration , there is an application for joining a domain.

History
It was created in 2010 as a replacement for Ubuntu , which was installed on laptops at the Antigua-Luberri BHI n Eskola 2.0 school in San Sebastian, from which it takes its name . The first versions were based on Ubuntu Gnome 2 and later on Ubuntu Flashback. Luberri had 64 and 32-bit versions until 16.04, and then only 64. Since version 20.04, Luberri has been based on Linux Mint Cinnamon and uses the Cubic application for its remastering. It is currently maintained by IƱigo Gebara and Alexander Gabilondo.
